Keeping Things Legal When Purchasing Firearm from a Gun Store

What Documents Do You Need to Purchase a Firearm from a Gun Store in California?

Purchasing a firearm in California involves a specific set of requirements that can be overwhelming, especially for first-time buyers. Whether you’re looking to buy a handgun, rifle, or shotgun, it’s crucial to understand the documentation needed to comply with state and federal laws.

This blog will guide you through the essential paperwork required for purchasing a firearm from a gun store in California.

What You Need to Get Started

Before stepping into a gun store, it’s important to know the foundational documents required for any firearm purchase in California.

  • Identification Card or Driver's License

  • Firearm Safety Card (FSC)

If you don’t already have an FSC, don’t worry! Many firearm stores offer the test on-site. The test usually takes about 15 minutes and costs $25. Once you pass, the card is issued immediately, allowing you to proceed with your purchase.

Knowing Your 10-Day Background Check

California requires that all firearm purchases are processed through an approved 10-day background check. This check is diligent in assuring the person purchasing the firearm is eligible. It costs $37.19, which you have to pay regardless of whether you pass or fail. However, no firearm is released to you until the 10-day waiting period has expired.

Address Mismatches and Additional Requirements

It's quite common for your ID or Driver's License to reflect an old address. If that is your case, California law will require you to produce another government-issued document with your name and current address.

Another common issue is the "Federal Limits Apply" notation some people have on their California IDs. If this notation appears in the top right corner of your ID, additional documentation will be required to verify your citizenship status.

Documents considered acceptable are a Certified Birth Certificate, a Naturalization Document, and a current U.S. Passport. This added step ensures you meet the federal requirements to purchase firearms.

Legal Name Changes

If your name has changed and it appears differently on any of the identification documents you are using to purchase a firearm, you must carry legal supporting documentation of that change. Ensuring all of your documents match will prevent On-Site problems from occurring or even delays in processing.

Proof of Residence

When buying a handgun, California requires additional proof of residence in addition to your ID and FSC. The State has rather strict guidelines on what constitutes to be an acceptable proof of residence. Here are the approved documents:

• Utility Bill: This should be dated within 90 days from the date of purchase. This includes a landline phone or cable bill. The bill needs to contain your name and current address.

• State-Issued License or Permit: Any license, permit, or registration issued by any state and having some period of validity can be shown as proof of residence.

• Residential Lease or Mortgage Deed: Any residential lease agreement or a deed of mortgage mentioning your name and address is also accepted.

All these documents are required under the California State mandate for the verification of your residential status within California.

Are The Rules Similar In Case You Are An Active-duty Military
Personnel?

Modifications may be made in the documentation process if you are an active-duty military member. You may provide a valid Military ID along with a Permanent Change of Station order as an alternative to a California Driver's License/State ID card.

Firearm Safety Card Test

If you do not already have a Firearm Safety Card, most firearm stores in California will conduct the test to obtain one.

Questions on this test are based on handling, storing, and using firearms safely. This state-issued test will take about 15 minutes to complete and costs $25. Upon completion of the test, you will be issued your FSC.

Be Prepared Before You Visit the Gun Store

If you are a first-time buyer, gather all the necessary paperwork and familiarize yourself with the criteria before visiting the store. Even if you are an experienced gun owner, stay informed about any changes to legislation or documentation requirements.

Proper documentation not only streamlines the purchase of a firearm but also indicates a sign of responsible gun ownership. Therefore, before going into any gun store, double-check your paperwork to ensure you are fully prepared to safely and legally buy a firearm.
